Lophelia pertusa is a stony coral found in dark, cold-waters generally at depths between 400 and 3,000 meters but sometimes shallower in high latitudes. Lophelia reefs are known to exist in deep waters off Scandanavia, the Bristish Isles, and the Blake Plateau in the the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea and Alboran Sea.

Lophelia reefs tend to be found in areas where there are strong water currents and are typically found along rocky ledge. The name Lophelia derives from the Greek lophos and helioi, 'a tuft of suns', referring to the individual sun-like coral polyps. Lophelia lives, however, in the aphotic zone where there is no sunlight, and at a temperature range from about 12–4 °C (54–39 °F).
